Mesilla Valley Metals is a metal products supplier based out of New Mexico. They provide a wide selection of metal products for use in construction, manufacturing and more, from square tubing to I-beams and many sizes of new and used pipe.

 

THE CHALLENGE

Mesilla Valley’s machine operators were becoming frustrated with their sawing equipment; even highly-trained, skilled employees were having difficulties ensuring consistency in cuts of metal. As metal products often have to be welded together, mismatched cuts could require secondary or tertiary efforts – assuming mistakes were even discovered in time. This led to customers dissatisfaction and a large amount of waste and redundancy. The amount of waste was hurting the company’s bottom line thanks to higher-than needed spending on labor and materials.

Adding to the company’s problem, the power saw they were using had a tendency to vibrate excessively, wearing out the blade faster than necessary. As well, the equipment needed to be powered on at all times, leading to higher electricity costs. The company needed a more efficient and cost-effective sawing solution that would help them meet their clients’ needs.

 

THE SOLUTION

Looking for sawing equipment with innovative features to address their needs, Mesilla Valley’s CEO became interested in the V-20 semi-automatic vertical band saw. This solution’s standard 4-degree forward approach angle makes cutting structural materials easier, without sacrificing accuracy.

“That was a huge advantage for us,” says Mesilla Valley President Casey Roberts. “In the demonstration, we saw that with the V-20 up and running, our operators would hold pieces together up to the light to check consistency and see a perfectly straight cut and a perfect angle.”

The V-20 saw was also the perfect choice for cutting Mesilla Valley’s power costs. Using on-demand hydraulics and a constant torque electric feed control, it uses two thirds less energy than competing band saws.

The company is also enthusiastic about the potential for a significant drop in its power usage. The V-20 only powers up when it’s needed, instead of burning through electricity all day long. Maintenance costs are similarly reduced; with a ball screw to feed the sawing hand, backlash is reduced, improving the life of the sawing blade – further reducing operating costs. “Thanks to HYDMECH, we’re cutting costs and able to give our customers a what they want, when they need it – all at a lower cost for us,” Roberts says.
